Tourette's Syndrome and ADHD-Juvenile Coping Strategies

My views concerning TS and ADHD come entirely from my own experiences. I am not in compare car insurance rates medical or mental health fields. I did not take medications as a kid, and I have no expertise on the subject and thus have no view on the topic one way or the other. If your child's mental health practitioner feels as though medications will benefit your child, then by all means proceed in that light if both he or she and yourself feel as though it is best for your youngster.

My views are predicated upon what I think would have helped myself as a child, as my young character is described within my story. In no way am I asserting that any "one size fits all" solution will benefit every child. On the other hand, one lesson I have learned from life with absolute certainty is that one should never think of one's self as being entirely unique. Whatever problems one might have, it is a certain bet that someone, somewhere is suffering the same.

In the wake of reported tragic cases of youngsters taking their own lives after having experienced profound bullying at school, individuals affected have taken up what might be termed the "anti-bullying" cause. Their approach to this problem has been to attempt to change the school environment by holding schools accountable to maintain a safe atmosphere for kids to learn. They have been successful in educating school administrators and teachers and in passing anti-bullying legislation on a state level. Some give lectures at schools in an attempt to educate students as well.

I commend such individuals. It must be acknowledged that some kids have problems that make them potential victims of bullies that they cannot adjust, such as aspects of their physical appearances or intellectual abilities. It is therefore incumbent upon schools to be as vigilant as possible in protecting such kids.

Nevertheless, I believe that in regard to many other kids, such as the one in my story, this is only half the equation in solving the problem. A child can never be completely sheltered from a harsh world with harsh individuals inhabiting it. So, whenever possible, teaching coping and social skills should be the other half of the equation in ultimately eliminating the problem.

Such an approach should not be seen as "blaming the victim." The more a child learns to act in a socially graceful manner, the better his or her chances will be for success and happiness throughout life. The formative years of childhood are all-important in deciding a person's destiny and lot in life.

My earliest memories begin at around the age of four and one-half. Talking with others, I think this is a fairly typical point when the human mind develops to the degree that it is capable of forming long-term memories.

This is the point where I believe a child begins to function in more than a strictly reactive manner. The child becomes fully self-aware and begins to think in the true sense of the word. My definition of thinking is: The ability to predict the future from past experience in intellectualized terms.

In a sense, we might say that this is the point when a human begins life as an individual. This is when the child becomes fully aware of the concepts of "self" and "not-self" and learns to make distinctions between the two. This is when the concept of competition with others first becomes apparent within a person.

No child sits down one day at around that age and reflects to himself or herself: "Well, I'm just beginning life now. I think I shall be a nervous, high-strung, impulsive, obsessive-compulsive person;" any more than another decides: "I'm going to be a calm, cool and collected and self-confident person." A child 4chan begins to act in accordance with his or her genetic nature. Children have very limited senses of self-analytic abilities and do not ask themselves, "Why am I acting this or that way?"

Lambasting a child for simply acting in accordance with his or her nature would make as much sense as buying a cat and then complaining when it doesn't bark. We all have certain proclivities towards certain traits.

There is a link between Tourette's Syndrome and OCD, and it is my belief that TS should be classified as an emotional disorder within the OCD grouping of disorders. As exampled on the hilarious television comedy *Monk*, people with obsessive-compulsive traits tend to be very bright. It is my belief that they process external stimuli more rapidly and efficiently than does the average individual. They also arrive at different conclusions than do others; rapidly dismissing stimuli that do not interest them; then reverting to the chronic self-reflection which is the hallmark of the condition.

It is my theory that the root cause of all emotional disorders within OC pathologies is what I term to be "acute self-awareness."

Some people have much better vision acuity when it comes to color than does the average person, and such individuals often make great artists. For those of us with more average color vision acuity, it never occurs to us that those with a superior sense see the world more vividly than we can. old school Basketball I, of course, have had no experience with being anyone other than myself-and therefore can never test the theory-, it is my belief that most people have somewhat less of a sense of "self" than do people with OC emotional disorders and are better able to focus their attention away from themselves and onto outside stimuli. Being less self-conscious, they are more poised.

The result of this is that individuals with OC disorders, because of their greater sense of self-awareness (or self-consciousness), develop defense mechanisms to protect that acute sense of self not common to people with a more normal sense of self. Protecting self becomes paramount to the point of becoming counterproductive.

Thus, those with OCD, for example, develop elaborate, seemingly bizarre rituals akin to superstition in the belief that if this or that seemingly mundane task is not constantly attended to, and performed with a precise protocol, then some terrible threat to the self will surely emerge as a result. Through learned behavior by repetition, the condition can persist to the point of becoming debilitating.

For those with TS, I believe the analogous defense mechanism is tics. The person will jerk his or her head, for example, in an effort to focus consciousness away from one's self and onto the outside stimulus he or she is expected to observe. Verbal tics are analogous to a karate expert's practice of yelling while breaking a board with his or her bare hand, as both an effort to increase concentration and avert attention away from physical pain. Through repetition, these aberrant practices become virtually involuntary.

People born with a greater sense of "self-awareness" have a correspondingly greater sense of trying to defend themselves, seeing threats, real or imagined, sooner than others. Thus, their naturally nervous or "high-strung" dispositions. Anxiety is their constant companion. This often provokes stress which aggravates the condition, resulting in a vicious cycle.

As with any other condition, the sooner it is recognized, diagnosed and treated the better the eventual outcome will be. Much of the advice I would have given myself as a kid is reflected within my story. What kids like these need most is structure in their lives and to learn self-discipline, patience and increased concentration.

Because these kids tend to be bright-even in spite of often mediocre school performances due to ADD-, they are often very defensive when it comes to criticism. ("Had anyone else spoken to twelve-year old Bobby Schultz like this, the boy would have reacted defensively from pride and dismissed the advice out of hand. Others had made similar comments in the past.") A parent must therefore appeal to the child's intellect and gradually lead him or her in the direction of self-realization and, hopefully, self-improvement practices.

Basically, any activity that will tend to increase a youngster's poise and self-confidence will be extremely beneficial, along with a parent's gentle but firm persuasion that he or she sticks to it. Youngsters like this tend to gravitate towards those relatively few activities which can successfully command their attention away from themselves. In my day, it was reading escapist fare like *The Hardy Boys* and then science fiction. Today, I would imagine it is video games. Excessive engaging in such pastimes is, in my opinion, a form of "self-medicating" and is detrimental to the child's well being.

Two activities I would suggest-if possible-are martial arts and acting lessons; especially from a teacher who holds to the "method acting" technique where one is taught to "become" the character one is playing. By doing such, the child might learn to recognize different character types and thus might also learn to better realize his or her own nature and how others see him or her.

Martial arts lessons, such as karate classes, are excellent vehicles to improve a child's concentration and self-confidence, as well as his or her physical stamina. It also has obvious side benefits when it comes to dealing with bullies, especially for boys.

Suggesting acting lessons might seem somewhat less practical due to financial or logistical considerations. But if at all possible, I believe they would be extremely beneficial in teaching a child social skills and poise. As I said, the method acting technique in particular, teaching an acting student to "become" his or her character while playing the part, will help the child develop an excellent intuitive and empirical perspective regarding the different natures people have and will help him or her learn more about the child's own. Such an insight is invaluable. By learning to act the part of another-perhaps a character with far more self-confidence than the child exhibits by nature-he or she might learn to try to incorporate within himself or herself such positive traits. By practice and repetition, such a transition might become virtually "second nature" to the youngster.

The mere fact of performing before others will do wonders for a child's self-confidence, poise and self-esteem. I know of at least one professional actor afflicted with Tourette's Syndrome. Your youngster might one day become very successful as an actor and repay the costs of such lessons many times over!

The major point to bear in mind is that such youngsters must learn to control their minds and bodies rather than allowing them to control and define them. As it is oft said, knowledge is power. By learning on an intellectual level to understand their inherent natures, children can be forewarned and thus forearmed and will be better able to face life on successful terms. As stated within my story, breathing exercises and a daily period of silent meditation, gradually increasing the time, will be extremely beneficial.

If I could choose one passage from my story that I consider the most important, it would be: "He told the boy that he simply had to learn to be patient and do things in their proper place and time and to do so with care. He explained that the youth had to learn to have confidence in the future and to stop acting like now was the only time he would ever have to play or do something else he enjoyed."

In the case of all people who suffer from what I consider to be "acute self-awareness," which is often accompanied by acute anxiety, there is always an underlying, often subconscious and unspoken fear that tomorrow will indeed never come. Thus, the present moment takes on undue importance in the case of such youngsters. Teaching a child to learn to cultivate the virtue of patience is paramount to the child's chances of success throughout life. A parent must insist on this and not give in to the child's demands for immediate gratification when such is not appropriate. One will not benefit his or her child if a parent folds.

Once again, appeal to the child's intellect and explain your reasoning. Listen to the child's almost certain rebuttals with patience yourself, but stand firm in your reasoning with him or her.

A parent must resist the temptation to baby such kids. A parent must use his or her wisdom of years to gently, but firmly guide a youngster into the path of right direction and insist that he or she sticks with these activities or others that might prove beneficial to the child's entire life.

End of Life Issues - What To Do?

In any event, "Setting Your House In Order" (and keeping it current by means of periodic revision) is a very important and necessary component of 21st Century "good sense" in spite of what past practices might have been. Dying in chaos or unprepared imposes a large burden on one's family and friends with far more needless anguish and expense than is necessary. Such needless anguish and avoidable expenses are unnecessary. A seminar presentation on "Setting Your House In Order" is possibly the most effective way to begin wrestling with the practical side of one's mortality. Each of us will experience the end of life through the deaths of others and eventually in one's own particular moment. The big question is, will you be prudently prepared to do so?

(Story told by Morgan, April, 1987))

Part One of Two

"Corporal Gill, give me your jeep keys, I need to get to the back area, where the Ammo dump is, Alpha dump is, and fast!" said Staff Sergeant Morgan Carter; then added, so there would be no resistance, "that is a direct order Corporal, from a Staff Sergeant!" (Knowing he out ranked him.)

"I work for a Major, and he wants the jeep cleaned for tonight, and he wants me to get it cleaned at the airstrip," answered Corporal Gill, "plus I am not sure exactly what a direct order is."

"First of all, I don't see the Major, second I don't need the jeep tonight, third, this is an emergency, if you need to contact him, and then do so, and to educate you, there is no such thing as a direct order, other than, the order is being given to you face to face, and that this order you do not seem to want to follow is coming from an authority, me, and you are a subordinate and let me add one more thing this dialogue, or two...you are really being given a lawful order, Viagra Informacin en Espaol there are no such things as unlawful ones, and you are in a war Matthew Hopkins which means if you refuse me, you can be put to death." said the Staff Sergeant.

"Sergeant, I really need to get to the air strip...!" said the corporal, as if the Sergeant was fooling with him.

The sergeant was taking down his jeep number, and his name, and the time of day, and the corporal was looking at him as he was doing this, and at the bottom of the paper it read, "Corporal Gill's refused this Staff Sergeant a direct, lawful order... ."

"Where you from Corporal," asked the sergeant.

"Well, I used to live in Vancouver..." replied the Corporal.

"Canada right?" confirmed the sergeant.

"Corporal Vancouver, give me the keys or take off those stripes."

"I can't, I just take orders from a Major," said the Corporal.

"No, you are now taking orders from me, who out rank you, and the Major is not here to protect you. And to be honest, the jeep looks clean and there are no ballrooms here to be cleaning jeeps for folks who are just going to get them dirty in an hour after they are cleaned anyhow! Listen up, you give me a lift to the Ammo dump, and go to the motor pool and tell them I sent you, and they will wash the jeep for you."

Fine, the corporal said and drove the Sergeant to Alpha dump, and he walked in to a shack, a few minutes later, the Sergeant came out with a rounded package, something heavy, somewhat heavy in a bag, got back into the jeep, and told him to drive back along the coast of the bay, and onto his unit, and he could drop him off and go get his jeep cleaned.

"What's in the bag Sergeant, if you do not mind me asking?" asked the corporal.

"No, I don't mind you asking, but what do you think is in it, I mean what would you think a sergeant who have you bring him to an ammo dump for, take you out of your way to drive him to an ammo dump put something into a bag that looks heavy and round?"

The corporal thought on this for a few minutes, looking at the road, the bag, the bay, the sergeant and back to the road. "You sure have a way with a conversation Sergeant, I mean a simple question needs a simple answer, and you make it out to be an act of congress, as if we got to debate everything out."

(Ming was sitting in the living room, with Morgan Carter, her husband, he was telling her about his times at the 611, back in 1970. They had eaten lunch, and the afternoon was warm, and it was simply a nice do to nothing, and perhaps out boredom, he was telling her this story, Corporal Gill just popped into his mind you might say. "Well said his wife, what was in the bag?" she asked. "What do you think was in the bag?" He asked his wife. I suppose a shell casing of a bomb." She replied. "Why that?" asked Morgan. "Because you wouldn't be allowed to carry a live bomb in a jeep over a rough road on your lap, would you? She answered and asked at the same time.)

Well, we got down along the beach area, and he said, the corporal that is, said, "A bomb, or its shell or its parts, it must be a defect your company commander wants to look at."

Fine, I thought and then said, "Boy, are you right on corporal," and he smiled at me like he had just received the Army Commendation Medal, for miraculous service. Next he dropped me off at the 611, and I went into my hutch, and opened up the bag, sat on my bunk bed, and ate my watermelon.

Part Two

A Scorned Mother

Ming asked Morgan, "Did you ever see the corporal again?"

"Funny you ask that," said Morgan, "No, I never did, but I heard what happened to him, as I look back, I kind of liked him, he was kind of laid back lad, simple, in way trying to make everything seem right."

"Well, it's a long story, but I'll tell you it in a nut shell. We don't really know people we bump into, for they have a history, and baggage, they often do not share, and we think because of this, we get to know them pretty well, but so often we kid ourselves, I shall tell you what I heard: his mother, she utterly condemned her husband, the three boys' father, for whatever reasons, after he left, and the three kids were raised by a scorned mother. He remarried, and had three more kids, two boys and one daughter.

"When the old man died all the kids went to the funeral, all six of them, one side loved him the other hated him because of the scorn they heard from their mother all those years. The boys from the scorned mother's side of the family, never got the side of the father, what took place, he let the hot sun beat on the kids head, just like the mother let the scorn burn out their hearts. The mother used hate to control the kids I'd say, and it was a way to get even with the father, teach him a lesson, have his kids hate him, you know what I mean, if I can't have you, I'll turn the kids away from you, thus, her revenge settled into a cold mold.

"And what you plant in kids is what comes out usually, what you harvest I mean, and so a perfect love was for the father on one side, by his new family, and a perfect hate on the other, form the old family.

"Corporal Gills went home to Iowa, with an energetic spirit, and found the two families fighting over vaporous old wounds, the ones the father set by not saying anything all those years, and the one the mother knitted into their fabric, their flesh all those years, and he was no longer around to put out the little fires, that would or could grow into a forest fire.

"Corporal Gills tried to put out the fire between the kids of both families, but it ended up quarrelsome, and one of the boys from the new family of the Gills, Charles Riley Gills, killed one of the boys, Corporal Gills younger brother. Thereafter feelings crept in the little sleepy eyed town in Iowa, and Corporal Gills, killed Charles Riley Gills, by beating him over the head with a pipe, but no one saw it, so he was under suspicion, not yet convicted of the crime. The daughter took a shotgun and killed the other brother of Corporal Gills, and she ended up in jail.

"Well, fine, they seemed to have gotten even (two for one although), but at the local bar, inside the bar, the remaining brother of the new Gills family, met Corporal Gills in there playing pool, awaiting trial, and started a fight, and he killed the boy, they called it manslaughter.

"Well, Corporal Gills got twenty years, and so did Peggy Gills.

"Hate is a form of control I believe, anger that eats at the soul. I suppose Corporal Gills is still serving his twenty-years in prison, and will be getting out in another three. Sometimes hate is a recurring nightmare, it controls you, you got to put it to sleep, you got to forgive the other person, not for their sake, but for yours, so it has no more control over you, so you can be set free, and go forward. You know what I mean about nightmares, because I get them as you already know Ming, old war nightmares, they call nowadays, stress related.

By not presuming to know what is in the other person's highest good, you avoid falling into preconceived attachments to particular outcomes. Be clear in your intention. This will reflect your code of integrity-one where you do not use your skills, knowledge and intuitive abilities to harm or manipulate another person.

4. One final suggestion- learn the meaning of surrender.

6) When they are telling you about how

you see right through their version of the
truth and sense the real story--how it's

monogamous to save their life--keep it to

7) When this person (from number 6 above)
suddenly tells you, on the first date, that
you're the only person they want and that
they'd "never" cheat on you, take it with a
grain of salt. They mean well, but don't know
themselves well enough to know better. If
they did, they would be honest with
themselves and be upfront about how

8) Go easy on them. Due to your heightened
awareness, in part, from the all the work
you've done on yourself, you may understand
them better than they understand themselves,
so it may be like relating to a child at times.

9) Try not to laugh when your date, who you
strongly suspect (after getting to know them
somewhat) would lie, steal, or cheat to get

your new significant other asks you what

I sensed this restlessness in me years ago as I entered college. A continual discontentment began to arise in me as I searched for my significance and sense of identity. I would not however say I was overtaken or entirely "possessed" by my own ego. I was aware of its movement and what it was saying. Yet because I had a full load of coursework to attend to, I considered the many diverse thoughts running through my mind a bit of a distraction and therefore discounted them focusing attention toward something more productive.

Upon experience a spiritual awakening at the age of 20-years-old toward the end of my time in University, I felt a newfound peace arise in me. It was as if I received a divine deposit of confidence that immediately altered and enhanced my inner composure. Since Jesus is the Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6-7), you too begin to drink of the spirit that soothes your soul and inwardly makes you whole. Being whole there is contentment and freedom from striving.

Striving is utterly and entirely exhausting. Often much of mankind's striving is nothing more than mental and inner work, as we tirelessly toil over and ponder matters pertaining to our lives.

The apostle Paul wrote to the disciples of Christ in the early church to not strive about words to no profit, that is semantics and futile arguments that did not impart divine life (see 2 Timothy 2:14). Moreover Paul instructed us to "not strive, but be gentle, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those who oppose themselves" (see 2:24-25).

Patience is the first thing we need to practice the power of presence, but usually the first thing most of us lack. God who is love, first describes love as patient (see 1 Corinthians 13). Patience is the quickest way to test somebody's spirituality and the depth of their love. How patient are they with people?

If a person cannot rule their own spirit and exhibit self control, then it is highly unlikely they are very spiritual. "He that has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls" (Proverbs 25:28). That is to say you have no restraint and whatever passes by has free reign and entry into your life.

Walls keep trespassers out. If you cannot rule your own spirit, then whatever thought circulates through your mind you most likely will give voice to it. Yet not everything we hear in our mind is worth uttering and repeating.

Sometimes quite frankly to do so can be quite disheartening and personally embarrassing. Yet some people who are unstable and insecure in their identity need excessive attention as a false way to seek personal affirmation. Therefore they will behave and speak inappropriately to get attention, no matter the cost to themselves or others.

Much of what we say can be quite offensive to others. The person who cannot hold and bridle their tongue is also out of control and greatly lacking in spirituality. "If any man does not offend in word, the same is a perfect man, and able to bridle the whole body. Behold we put bits in the mouths of horses, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet they are turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor directs. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindles" (James 3:2-5)

He or she who always must be heard and talking nonstop has undone their spirituality and inner presence already.

Eckhart speaking of the ego says, "It's always striving away from now internally. And that's of course the dysfunction."

Oprah mentioned a moment she herself had while she was waiting to get something, wherein she put to practice the lesson of being still within rather than manifesting impatience and anticipation.

Eckhart said, "Whenever you are waiting to speak, why not practice being rather than waiting, which means completely inhabit this moment and feel your body, perhaps feel the energy ...that's very pleasant to feel that you're alive."

If we can just harness our thoughts, quiet our mind, and withhold speech from the ego we can silence its activity and dwell inwardly more peaceably as we practice being.

Practice the art of being present and discover how pleasant it can be! Allow patience and being present to transform you inwardly as you partake of the nature of deity.

Yesteryear's Great Soul-Winners Write on the Baptism With the Holy Spirit

Pentecostals/Charismatics are not alone Family Ties their belief that the Baptism with the Holy Spirit is subsequent to salvation; nor are they the first to hold this view. Many of the great non-Pentecostal evangelists and teachers of yesteryear -- spiritual giants whose names are linked with soul winning -- held to this view of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit long before there was a Pentecostal or a Charismatic movement. It is not recorded that they spoke with other tongues, but they did teach that the Baptism with the Holy Spirit is subsequent to salvation.

DR. R. A. TORRY:

Most evangelicals know of R. A. Torry, a superb teacher and a close friend of D. L. Moody. Torry was the first president of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He also served as co-pastor of the Moody Church in that same city.

In his book The Baptism With The Holy Spirit, Torry wrote: "Religious biography abounds in instances of men who have home mortgage refinance tip along as best they could until one day they were led to see there was such an experience as the baptism with the Holy Spirit and to seek and obtain it; Army of Darkness that hour there came into their service a new power that utterly transformed its character. Finney, Brainerd, and Moody were cases in point. But cases of this character are not confined to a few exceptional men. The author has personally met and corresponded with those who could testify to the new power that God granted them through the baptism with the Holy Spirit. These hundreds of men and women were from all branches of Christian service. Many of them were ministers, Sunday school teachers, personal workers, fathers and mothers. What we have in promise in the words of Christ many have, and all may have, in glad experience. 'Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.'" ("The Baptism with the Holy Spirit"; Torry, R. A; Bethany Fellowship, Inc.; Minneapolis; 1972, 25).

Torry's position of " . . . what many have . . . all may have" always has been the position of the Pentecostal/Charismatic movements. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is " . . . not something for a select few," as some claim that Pentecostals/Charismatics teach. The Promise has been given to every believer, but not every believer believes the Promise

Torry also wrote:

"We may have a very clear call to service; it may be as clear as the apostles had -- but the charge is laid upon us, as upon them, that before we begin that service we must 'tarry until ye be clothed with power from on high.' This enduement (spelling Torry's) with power is through the baptism with the Holy Spirit . . ." (Torry; ibid; 30-31).

Torry's statement precisely summarized the view of modern Pentecostals/Charismatics when he wrote: "It is quite possible to have something, yes much of the Spirit's presence and work in the heart and yet come short of that special fullness and work known in the Bible as the baptism or filling with the Holy Spirit" (ibid; flyleaf page).

In his classic work on the great doctrines of the Bible, Dr. Torry observed:

"A man may be regenerated by the Holy Spirit and still not be baptized with the Holy Spirit. In regeneration there is an impartation of life, and the one who receives it is saved; in the Baptism with the Holy Spirit there is an impartation of power and the one who receives it is fitted for service. Every true believer has the Holy Spirit. But not every believer has the Baptism with the Holy Spirit, though every believer may have." ("What the Bible Teaches"; Torry, R. A.; Fleming H. Revell Company; Chicago; 1898; 271).

"To be regenerated by the Holy Spirit is one thing; to be baptized with the Holy Spirit is something different, something further. This is evident from Acts 1:5. There Jesus said, 'Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.' They were not then baptized with the Holy Spirit. But they were already regenerated. Jesus himself had pronounced them so. In John 15:3, He said to the same men, 'Now ye are clean through the word' (cf. James 1:18; 1 Pet. 1:23). And in John 13:10; 'Ye are clean, but not all,' excepting by 'but not all' the one unregenerate man in the apostolic company, Judas Iscariot (See John 13:11). The apostles, excepting Judas Iscariot, were then already regenerate men, but they were not yet baptized with the Holy Spirit.

"From this it is evident that regeneration is one thing and the baptism with the Holy Spirit is something different, something further. One can be regenerated and still not be baptized with the Holy Spirit" ("The Baptism with the Holy Spirit"; R. A. Torry; Pgs 16-17 All Bible references Torry's).

Previous to 1898 -- more than one hundred years ago -- Dr. R. A. Torry taught precisely what Pentecostal/Charismatic Christians teach today regarding the distinction between the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit and the subsequent impartation of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit for service, an impartation available to every believer.

A Final Quote from R. A. Torry:

"A number of suggestive phrases -- 'Baptized with the Holy Spirit,' 'Filled with the Holy Ghost,' 'The Holy Ghost fell on them,' 'The gift of the Holy Ghost was poured out,' 'Receive the Holy Ghost,' 'The Holy Ghost came upon them,' 'Gifts of the Holy Ghost,' 'I send the promise of my Father upon you,' 'Endued with power from on high,' are used in the New Testament to describe one and the same experience" (What the Bible Teaches; R. A. Torry; 270).

(JOSPREL'S COMMENT)

A study of the Biblical terminology used in connection with the believer's relationship to the Holy Spirit reveals that the phrases, "baptized with the Holy Spirit" and "filled with the Holy Ghost" are synonymous. It therefore follows that the command: "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is access; but be filled with the Spirit;" (Ephesians 5:18) refers to the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. Moreover, the command calls to mind the accusation made against the upper room believers in Acts 2: 13: "Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine," also a possible proof-text that the command to be filled with the Spirit in Ephesians 5:18, refers to the Baptism with the Holy Spirit.

DR. D. L. MOODY:

Dwight Lyman Moody was one of the greatest evangelists the Church has ever known. It is reported that, though he ministered in an era of slow travel and a limited media, his ministry took him over one million miles, and that he preached to some 100 million people.

In "Bush Aglow," a biography of Dr. Moody, Richard Day included a chapter titled: "And Copies Pentecostal Strategy." He quoted Moody as saying, with choking voice and tear-filled eyes, "'If you think anything of me, if you love me, pray for me that God may anoint me for the work in Chicago. I want to be filled with the Spirit, that I may preach the Gospel as never before. We want to see the salvation of God as never before.' Thus he began the copying of the Pentecostal strategy with emphases on prayer; prayer for the Holy Spirit." ("Bush Aglow"; Day, Richard E; The Judson Press; Philadelphia: 1936; 311).

R. A. Torry certainly understood what Moody, his close friend and co-worker, meant by the "Pentecostal strategy." He quoted Moody as saying during a discussion on the Baptism with the Holy Spirit:

"Oh, why will they split hairs? Why don't they see that this is just the one thing that they themselves need? They are good teachers, they are wonderful teachers, and I am so glad to have them here, [The Moody Bible Institute] but why will they not see that the baptism with the Holy Ghost is just the one touch that they themselves need?" (D. L. Moody, as quoted by R. A. Torry in: The Baptism with the Holy Spirit; flyleaf page).

DR. CHARLES G. FINNEY:

The revivals under the ministry of that quintessential evangelist, Charles G. Finney, did not merely stir the churches of the 1800's, it quaked them into an awakening, most often, in no gentle manner. Under his ministry, the convicting power of the Holy Spirit shut down entire cities and communities, a number of them a short distance from Josprel's hometown.

A brilliant scholar and educator, Finney was a Bible expositor of exceptional intellect. He recorded that, subsequent to his salvation, he was endued with a mighty Baptism with the Holy Spirit, the source of his power. Recording his salvation experience, he stated that, he went into a woods one day to seek God for forgiveness from sin. Finney wrote:

"Sin appeared awful, infinite. It broke me down before the Lord. Just at that point this passage of Scripture seemed to drop into my mind with a flood of light: 'Then shall ye go and pray unto me, and I will harken [spelling Finney's] unto you. Then shall ye seek me and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.' I instantly seized hold of this with my heart . . . That seemed to settle the question."

Persisting in prayer, Finney continued to:

" . . . receive and appropriate promises for a long time . . ." before returning to town. His mind was quiet; his conviction was gone, as was "the load of sin under which I had been laboring."

Entering his law office he started to sing hymns:

"But as soon as I began to sing those sacred words, I began to weep. It seemed as if my heart was all liquid . . . After trying to suppress my tears, I put up my instrument and stopped singing." After dinner, he and his law partner "were engaged in removing our books and furniture to another office. We were very busy at this, but had little conversation all the afternoon. My mind remained in that profoundly tranquil state. There was a great sweetness and tenderness in my thoughts and feelings."

Toward evening, Finney's law partner went home and Finney went into prayer. He testified that he experienced a vision of Christ:

"It seemed to me that I bathed his feet with my tears."

After the vision, Finney entered his front office:

"But as I turned and was about to take a seat by the fire, I received a mighty baptism of the Holy Ghost. Without any expectation of it, without ever having the thought in my mind that there was any such thing for me, without any recollection that I had ever heard the thing mentioned by any person in the world, the Holy Spirit descended upon me in a manner that seemed to go through body, soul and mind. I could feel the impression, like a wave of electricity, going through and through me . . . It seemed like the very breath of God. I can recollect distinctly that it seemed to fan me, like immense wings . . . I wept aloud with joy and love; and I do not know but I should say, I literally bellowed out the unutterably gushings of my heart" ("Charles G. Finney, An Autobiography"; Oberlin College; Fleming H. Revell Company; Old Tappan, New Jersey; 1876, 1908; 15-21).

As did those named above, faithful believing Christians in every Church age and in every nation - anonymous to us though they may be - sought and received the empowerment of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. Thus equipped for Christian service, they went forth, obedient to the Great Commission.

Crossing Over: The Origin of Soul and the Term "Rock & Roll"

"I rock em, roll em, all night long," bragged the Dominoes' bass singer, Bill Brown. The year was 1951, and the raunchy lyrics were from Sixty Minute Randyfuchs a song whose popularity would Wp Login reincarnated years later in the movie Bull Durham. At the time, Brown didn't realize he was making history in two ways. First of all, his "rock em, roll em" reference would give title to a new style of music taking shape on the American horizon. Secondly, after spending 14 weeks at #1 on the Rhythm and Blues chart, Sixty Minute Man would peak at #17 on the mainstream Pop chart, making it the first crossover single in American music history.

The phenomenon would pick up steam as white teenagers continued to tap into the predominately-Negro world of R&B. In 1953, The Orioles' Crying in the Chapel just missed the coveted Pop Top Ten by stalling at #11. Despite being banned by the FCC for suggestive lyrics in 1954, Hank Ballard's Work with Me Annie sold a million singles without radio airplay, as did the sequels Annie Had a Baby and Annie's Aunt Fannie. Yes, America-times were a-changin'!

One artist who recognized the change in trends early on was Sam Cooke. A popular lead singer with the gospel Soul Stirrers, Cooke saw that younger listeners were rapidly abandoning Gospel for more liberated forms of music. By 1955, Chuck Berry and Little Richard had successfully targeted the teenage Rock & Roll market and scored hits with Maybellene and Tutti Fruitti respectively. Looking to capitalize in the same respect, Cooke made the transition from Gospel to Pop with the release of You Send Me in 1957.

"It was a huge risk on Sam's part," Cooke's youngest brother David remarked. "Pop music was seen as the devil's music by people in the church. If he failed in Pop after losing his Gospel fan base, he wouldn't have had anywhere to turn. His career could've began and ended at the same time."

By singing with clear diction and utilizing white background singers, Cooke intentionally created a Playthefield that wouldn't be categorized as ethnic, but one that would be more conducive to a mainstream audience. He figured if he were to target two markets, his chance of success would double as well. Casey Kasem, who would eventually become a nationally-recognized radio host in his own right, was a DJ on Detroit's WJBK in the fall of 1957. Kasem is credited as being the first jock to play You Send Me on a traditionally Rock & Roll station. The rest, as they say, is history. With Cooke's gospel roots bubbling below the surface, You Send Me rose to #1 on both the Pop and R&B Young Romance creating a whole new sound the world called Soul.

The genre-mixing, "Top mercedes car insurance format many radio stations adopted in the 1980's has been blurred even more by the popularity of Rap and Hip Hop. Nevertheless, credit should be given to those brave pioneers-artists and disc jockeys alike-who blazed the trail during one of the greatest eras in American music history. It's only because they dared to venture outside their comfort zone that popular music as universally accepted as it is today.

The compounds responsible for the protective powers of wine are a class of compounds called antioxidants. Red wines contain several antioxidants the key isolate being the polyphenol compound called trans-Resveratrol or Res for short. Res is found in other fruit besides grapes including mulberries, raspberries and muscadine grapes (indigenous to the Americas). And in this particular grape Res is reported to be seven times as concentrated. Resveratrol is also encountered in peanuts and other nuts. Researchers at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the University of Illinois found that Res has both anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. A paper published by the UNC researchers in 2000 in the journal Cancer Research reports that Res inhibits the activity of a protein called NF-kappa B which attaches to DNA inside human cells. Additionally these agents reduce blood-clotting factors limiting thrombus from causing clots in the coronary arteries. Some of these properties may be attributed to the fact that Res has mild estrogenic properties and estrogens as a class of hormones seem to be cardioprotective.

Still another study indicated that Resveratrol aided in the formation of nerve cells. There are those experts that believe this may be helpful in the treatment of neurological diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons in the near future. There is even one study out there claiming that daily moderate wine consumption will result in weight loss.

Not all wines are created equally. Studies from the University of California at Davis conducted studies on several varietals. They determined that higher concentrations of flavonoids are present in Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir grapes. Merlot and Red Zinfandels have far fewer flavonoids. Whites once again came out short, as the bigger bolder more tannic wines seemed best for high flavonoid yields.

Resveratrol has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries in the form of a plant called Polygonum cuspidatum for the treatment of liver and heart conditions. Why take a bitter herb when you can sip a fine wine?

TV Viewing Distance and Screen Placement in the Home Theater

Sit too close to your big screen TV and you will be able to see the image build-up structure - scanning lines or pixels forming the image thus distracting your attention and spoiling your home theater experience. Yet, sit too far away, and the impact will be lost.

There are differing opinions on the best way to determine the optimum TV viewing distance for a specific screen size. Just go to the movie theater and you will soon realize that it is all a question of personal preference - some would sit at the very back. Others would go straight to the front row, as they prefer the bigger picture and a wider angle of view, while some would simply choose their seat randomly somewhere in between these two extremes.

The truth is that there are no scientific rules her. This does not mean that there aren't any guidelines that you should follow when planning a big screen purchase or a would-be home theater room.

SMPTE Recommendations and the THX medical marijuana standards:

The Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends that the screen size for home theater use should occupy a 30 degrees field of view - in the horizontal plan - for the audience. Alternatively, the ideal TV viewing distance should be such that the screen width occupies an angle of 30 degrees from the viewing position.

This 30-degrees viewing angle seems to have been accepted by many as the standard in home theater and motion picture viewing.

This SMPTE guideline is also in line with the THX certification standards in that these recommend that the back row of seats should have at least a 26 degrees viewing angle and while recommending an optimum viewing angle of 36 degrees.

It is believed that within these viewing angle limits, the viewer will get better immersed into the action movie itself.

Vision System limitations:

There is also the issue of TV viewing distance based on visual acuity. This does not represent the optimum viewing distance - rather, this relates to the maximum viewing distance beyond which some picture detail will be lost.

Technically speaking, visual acuity is a measure of the eye spatial resolving power and indicates the angular size of the smallest detail that a person visual system can resolve. A person with 20/20 (or 6/6 when expressed in meters) normal vision can resolve a spatial pattern separated by a visual angle of one minute of arc angle i.e. 1/60th of a degree, at the eye when viewed at 20 feet away. Expressed differently, a person with normal 20/20 vision is capable of identifying an object with a height of 1.76mm at 20 feet way.

In terms of TV viewing distances, these represent the point beyond which some of the picture detail will no longer be resolved by the viewer vision system.

So How Does All This Translate In Practical Terms?

A few rules-of-thumb can help put in practice the guidelines detailed above. These rules for viewing distance refer to the screen width rather than the screen diagonal and therefore apply to both 4:3 and 16:9 display formats.

A general rule for the TV viewing distance based on the SMPTE and visual acuity guidelines, is that the nearest TV viewing distance between you and your big screen TV should be limited to approximately twice the screen width (more precise 1.87 x screen width for a subtended angle of 30 degrees), while the furthest distance being no more than five times the width of your screen.

This rule of thumb should give you a fairly good approximation for your TV viewing distance. It does not necessarily represent the ideal home theater viewing distance but rather the limits within which your TV viewing distance should theoretically be out of the trouble zone.

In other words, move closer than twice the screen width size, and the picture scanning lines, pixels and any other video artifacts will become too visibly intrusive - leading to distractions that will spoil your movie watching experience. Move further away than 5 times the screen width and your vision system will no longer be able to resolve all the picture detail.

But

It is also important to realize that these maximum and minimum viewing distances should be best rate loans in the light of the video signal definition.

A fully resolved high definition TV (1080i, 1920x1080) supports a closer viewing distance than standard analog TV. Thus while twice the screen width would be the ideal TV viewing distance for a HDTV display, it would be a bit too close for standard TV; in the later case, a three times the screen width would be a better option.

Similarly, the five times the screen width as the maximum view distance, while more than adequate for a standard analog TV picture, is a bit too far away for a person to see the fine detail supported by a HDTV picture a three to four times the screen width represents a more practical limit for the maximum viewing distance in the case of HDTV.

These rules-of-thumb work best with big screen TV sizes in the range 42-inches and over.

When it comes to the use of regular-size standard definition analog TVs in the home theater, i.e. up to 36 / 40 diagonal, the optimum viewing distance range is between 8 feet and 12 feet. TV sets smaller than 36-inches aren't big enough to qualify for Home Theater use; their smaller screen size will not provide the desired impact on the viewer.

Vertical Angle of View & Screen Height:

For optimum viewing, the eyes of the viewer should be level with the center of the screen.

Maximum vertical angle of view: In those home theater set-ups where this is not possible, the SMPTE guidelines suggest that the maximum vertical angle measured at the seated eye height from the front row center seat to the top most part of the projected image should not exceed 35 degrees.

This does not represent the optimum viewing angle but rather the limit beyond which the viewer will be subject to an increased neck strain.

This maximum vertical angle limit is always measured from the front row as this represent the extreme angle of view.

Minimum angle of vision: While there do not appear to be any specific SMPTE or THX guidelines in this respect, yet studies have shown that if the screen size occupies less than 15 degrees of the viewer's vertical field of view, than that image appears small.

Practical Considerations:

In a typical home theater set-up, you do not need to really worry about neither the maximum vertical angle of view, nor about the minimum vertical angle of vision for an effective movie theater experience.

If one were to adhere to the recommended TV viewing distance of twice the screen width (as further detailed above based on the SMPTE guideline of 30 degrees horizontal field of vision), you would automatically be complying with the minimum angle of vision. The reason being that there is a fixed relation between screen height and width in accordance to your home theater screen aspect ratio of either 16:9 or 4:3.

Further more, in a typical home theater setup, it would be very difficult to exceed the maximum vertical angle of view beyond which you will be subject to an increased neck strain.

Taking into account that most home theater rooms are approximately 10 feet (3m) high, the resultant vertical viewing angle is normal well within the maximum of 35 degrees detailed in the SMPTE guidelines all you have to do is just remain within the twice the screen width guideline for your viewing distance.

It can be really annoying. You have just got off the plane, booted up your lap top and set the clock to local time. Yet all your appointments suddenly move, not just the ones on that side of the ocean either, when you return home and reset the clock the appointments refuse to go back.

This problem occurs because of the Space Sentinels a computer handles time. In general computers ignore time zones and base their time on UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) the international time standard.
Time can cause havoc with computers, not just with lap tops either. Computers all over the world need to be telling the same time particularly if they have to perform time sensitive transactions or need to keep their networks secure.

Who's Sucking the Time Out of Your Life?

If you are serious about being more productive then you might want to think about identifying what Dan Kennedy calls the time vampires in your day.

I was recently talking to endowments selling senior scientist who is overloaded with work, too many things to do already and finding she can't get ahead Collective Unconscious every time she tries to get on with what she had planned for the day - does any t-shirts this sound familiar?

Now I know sometimes things urgent things come up and we all want to be helpful but important isn't always urgent and even if it is urgent - urgent for whom? Is it really more important than what you were working on?

This lady really wanted to do a goo job and hadn't found it easy to say no to people's urgent work requests but she found that even if the conversation only last the promised few minutes, it could easily knock 15-30 minutes productive time out of her day. This is all too easy to understand when you realise you have allowed them to break your productive state and when this happened how often does another distraction slip in?

I know we all want to be friendly and helpful but what these Krofft Supershow are really saying is I have a problem and it is important enough TO ME to disrupt your time - is their problem really more important to you than getting your stuff done?

If you recognise this pattern and being productive is important to you then I guess you have tried a few things to clear this.

Assuming you can't find a hidey hole and set aside "prime productive time" [as mentioned in the daily tips] what can you do?

The absolute first thing I'd suggest is stop blaming them and take responsibility for allowing this to happen. Let's face it people do what works, if they disturb you once and get what they want immediately - what do you think they are going to do next time they want something from you?

Accepting personal responsibility may not seem injury compensation claim at first after all, there are things that can seem out of our control but accepting responsibility gives you choices as to how to respond.

When you first set boundaries in anything, the people around you who are used to the old way will test them, your job is to defend them, (maintaining rapport) the more you defend them the more people will respect them.

So if someone calls in and says "I can see you're busy but this will only take 5 minutes", you can say something like.

"Ok so it'll only take 5 minutes but you can see I'm really busy so I'll deal with it when I've completed this at 3pm, ok?"

"No worries, if it's really urgent I can rearrange some stuff I've got planned for 3pm and do it then, how would you like me to let you know it's complete?"

Then turn around and get back on with what you had planned.

If it's your boss, then it might take a bit more tact but you could always point out what you were doing and just say "Yes and would it be OK if I finish this first because I promised it to X by this afternoon."

The key to making this work is to recognise that it's no good being productive doing what is important to other people (unless that's the purpose of your job) you can only be really effective and productive if you are focusing on what is important to you.

It might not be easy at first and they might "fight back at first" I'd encourage you to see your time as the moments of your life, you wouldn't let people sneak in to your office and steal out of your purse or wallet!

So defending your time is just as important, don't you think?

The point of this article isn't to give you all the answers, it's merely to help you recognise these "vampires"for what they are doing in your life and to get you curious about how you can deal effectively with them when they get you cornered.
